What Universities Offer a Bachelor of Science in Botany?

Many of society's most pressing issues -- global climate change, food security, disease prevention and treatment, and pollution -- have created high demand for the unique expertise of botanists. Botanists study the structure, function, evolution and diversity of plants, as well as the interaction of plants with other organisms. Many colleges offer courses in botany to students pursuing a baccalaureate degree in biology. A smaller number, in all four regions of the country, specifically convey the degree of Bachelor of Science in Botany.
  1. Northeast

    • Connecticut College offeres courses in ethnobotany, the study of how cultures use indigenous plants.

The botany program at Connecticut College, a small, private liberal arts school, is internationally recognized in the areas of coastal, marine and estuarine studies. Students can expect a well-rounded program in all aspects of botany and biology. With small class sizes, mentor-guided independent study and original research, students benefit from a great deal of faculty interaction. The University of Maine offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in botany. Botany students are encouraged to augment their formal curriculum with faculty-guided independent research. Faculty expertise covers a broad spectrum of botany, including plant and fungal systematics, marine algal ecology and plant paleoecology.

    Midwest

    • Founded by Methodists, Ohio Wesleyan University is a small private college just north of Columbus. Its botany program provides students with a broad background in the plant sciences. Facilities for teaching and research include an arboretum, greenhouse, botanical museum and two forested nature preserves. Botany majors participating in independent study have access to state-of-the-art microscopy at both the University and at the nearby United States Department of Agriculture facility. The University of Wisconsin at Madison undergraduate program in botany features faculty with world-class expertise in a range of areas. The number of botany majors rarely exceeds 40 students, ensuring a high degree of contact with faculty. This small number of students also allows for hands-on learning through a required research experience.

    South

    • Students at the University of Florida can participate in plant research projects in the tropics.

The botany curriculum at the University of Florida includes courses in ecology, genetics, physiology, molecular biology and biochemistry, giving students a broad background in the biology of plants. Internationally renowned faculty conduct botany research from Alaska to the tropics. Undergraduates in botany can conduct independent research or assist in research projects at faculty research laboratories or field sites abroad. The University of Oklahoma in Norman has a small but successful department of Botany and Microbiology. Many of its faculty are award-winning, with internationally recognized research programs. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Botany are encouraged to conduct research projects with guidance from faculty members.

    West

    • Humboldt State University, the northernmost campus of the California State University system, is the largest undergraduate botany program in the nation. Facilities include both a research and a collection greenhouse, the latter being more than 11,500 square feet in size, as well as a vascular plant herbarium. Abundant research opportunities are coupled with a broad and expansive curriculum and well-regarded faculty. The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University is interdisciplinary, a major focus being on the interaction between plants and microorganisms. Faculty have diverse research expertise in areas ranging from gene regulation to the mathematical modeling of plant disease development.
