Founded in 1838, Greensboro College is an undergraduate college that also offers four master's degree programs. As of 2011, the school had 1,200 registered students and 78 full-time faculty members. The college has a full range of sports teams, including men's and women's basketball, tennis, soccer and cross-country. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Greensboro College is located near downtown Greensboro, which has the third largest population in the state.
Also located in Greensboro, Guilford College was first established as the New Garden Boarding School by Quakers in 1837. Guilford is the fourth oldest institution in North Carolina that bestows degrees. Sports include golf, tennis and baseball. The campus has been deemed by the United States Department of the Interior as a National Historic District.
First chartered in 1891, Meredith College is an independent private women's college located on 225 acres in Raleigh, North Carolina's capital. Meredith offers a diverse liberal arts undergraduate education, with 32 majors and concentrations available for students, in addition to co-educational graduate programs in business, nutrition and education. Meredith also offers an extensive study-abroad program. Sports include softball and basketball.
Although Salem College is a private, liberal arts women's college, men are admitted into the Fleer Center (a program for adult students) and the Graduate Program in education. Salem is the oldest women's college in the U.S. and has a total 2011 enrollment of 1,100 students. Among its intercollegiate sports teams are basketball, cross-country, volleyball and soccer. Located in Winston-Salem, the college offers four undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees.
