The American Military University was originally conceived as a flexible learning institution providing service men and women a way to study for post-secondary degrees while working in the service. This continues today with its model of distance education that includes a Bachelor of Arts in Transportation and Logistics Management. This degree program includes the study of transportation from an economic, technical and practical viewpoint, as well as teaching the student about the industry and the standards that are enforced throughout it.

There are also schools that offer master's degrees in Logistics and Transportation Management. These degrees are for those individuals who want to pursue positions in upper management or ownership of companies in the transportation industry. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has a master's program that incorporates interaction with industry professionals on top of the course load. The University of Texas also offers a Master's of Science in Logistics, which is a joint program through the colleges of Engineering and Business Administration.
Universities that offer PhD programs in logistics are primarily training their students to teach in the area of logistics. Ohio State University has a well recognized PhD program in Logistics through its Max M. Fisher College of Business. This degree requires completion of five courses in logistics and a number of classes in research tools, such as statistics and psychology. A research paper, general examination and dissertation are all required in this PhD program.
