Founded in 1889, the Boston Architectural College is an independent, professional college located in Boston's Back Bay. The college offers bachelor of science in architecture degrees and master of architecture degrees. It also has programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees in interior design, landscape architecture and design studies. The college combines experiential practical experience in the field with academic education in the classroom.
The School of Architecture at Northeastern University in Boston focuses its curriculum on the global forces influencing urban areas, including design, history, technology, commerce and culture. In 2009, the university was ranked 14th nationally in architectural research out of 103 schools by the Key Centre for Architectural Sociology. The university confers the bachelor of science in architecture and master of architecture degree.
Students can obtain a master of architecture degree (M.Arch.) from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Graduate School of Design offers two streams for its M.Arch. program, including one designed for students who obtained a non-architecture undergraduate degree and a second for students who completed an architecture bachelor's degree. In addition to its baccalaureate programs, the university confers the master of architecture, and master of science degrees in architecture studies, building technology and visual studies. Although not accredited by NAAB as architecture doctorates, doctoral programs are available in building technology and other related disciplines.
The Massachusetts College of Art and Design master of architecture program includes two tracts for students depending on whether they hold a non-architecture or an architecture bachelor's degree. Both streams allow graduates to practice as a professional architect in Massachusetts. Located just west of downtown Boston and close to the Northeastern University campus, the college opened in 1873 and was the first independent college of art and design in the United States.
Wentworth Institute of Technology is an independent technical design and engineering college. Founded in 1904, the college is located west of downtown Boston. It offers three professional degrees, including a four-year bachelor of science in architecture program and a one-year master of architecture program for graduates of the baccalaureate program. Wentworth also has a two-year master of architecture stream for external candidates who have a non-architecture undergraduate degree.
