Decide what type of degree you want to pursue. Some of the degree options include certificate and associate programs, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and graduate degree programs.
Choose whether to work toward one of the degrees in crime scene investigation, or a degree in criminal justice, forensics or criminology. Agencies have different degree requirements, so find out about the prerequisites of the offices where you would like to work.
Locate schools that offer criminal justice, crime scene investigation and forensic science programs. The Crime Scene Investigator Network website lists colleges and universities that offer these programs online and on campus.
Research all of the schools that have the programs that interest you. Visit their websites to find out more about the school, their requirements, campus living, tuition and fees.
Make a list of the schools that have the program necessary for the career you want, and the ones that appear to be a good fit.
Contact each of the schools on your list. If you plan to attend classes on campus, then ask for an appointment to tour the school. If you plan to attend online, then set up a phone or an online meeting with a school counselor.
Ask important questions about the school and program when you tour the school or have your meeting. Inquire about degree requirements, class schedules, tuition and any other information you would like to know.
