Oregon Community Colleges for Solar Training

According to the Oregon Department of Energy, the goal of Oregon is to help communities achieve long-term sustainability through renewable energy resources. At least 25 percent of energy in Oregon comes from renewable energy sources, such as solar energy. Oregon Community Colleges in Oregon can enable students to learn how to implement solar systems and obtain a career in renewable energy.
  1. Lane Community College

    • Lane Community College offers an associates degree as an energy management technician that includes an option to become certified as a renewable energy system installer or to enable the student for a career in conservation management. An application is necessary for entrance into the limited enrollment program. The school offers classes in design and installation for solar thermal and solar photovoltaic systems. An Associate of Applied Science degree is earned at the completion of the program. The program in 2011 is estimated to cost $750 over the cost of the regular tuition.

    Portland Community College

    • Portland Community College offers a two-year program in renewable energy systems to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree or a one year certification program in Electronic Engineering. The school offers a variety of classes on solar energy including the principles of solar energy systems, solar hot water, solar electronic controls and systems, and solar, thermal and electric systems installer. An application is required for admittance in the program. The courses are fully transferable to the four-year program offered at the Oregon Institute of Technology.

    Chemeketa Community College

    • Electronics students at Chemeketa Community College have the option of enrolling in the renewable energy systems program. The common first year courses are taken with other electronic students with a choice of specializations beginning in the student's second year in wind solar, photovoltaic or biomass energy management. Those who work in the field already are offered the option of taking the courses in renewable energy after prerequisite courses are completed. The degree is listed under Electronics Technologies. Completion of the program results in an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree.

    Clackamas Community College

    • Clackamas Community College offers a two-year program in renewable energy systems technology and a one-year certification program in renewable energy technology. The school has partnerships with Oregon State, Portland State and the Oregon Institute of Technology universities for continued education. The college offers many courses in solar energy systems including a course that requires students to work with others to evaluate, design and select one or more renewable energy systems for solar, wind or micro-hydro installation.
