List of 4-Year Colleges for Marine Sciences

Marine science programs at four-year colleges focus on the study of saltwater life. A degree in marine sciences can lead to careers in marine biology, oceanography, ocean engineering, aquatic veterinary medicine and marina manager. A school offering a strong marine science degree is more likely to be located along an ocean coastline or near an aquarium to offer hands-on learning opportunities. Studies in the open ocean and internships give students valuable out-of-classroom experiences.
  1. Florida State University

    • Florida State University in Tallahassee offers more than 275 degree programs, including an undergraduate degree in biology with a marine biology concentration. The program features research opportunities and internships in marine biology research and public outreach. The school also offers an environmental science degree within the earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences department and a master's degree in aquatic environmental science.

    University of California-Santa Barbara

    • The University of California-Santa Barbara, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, boasts a 1,055-acre campus along the coastline. The school offers more than 200 majors, degrees and credentials, including a major in aquatic biology. The program includes outdoor labs in the Pacific Ocean and four protected nature reserves. The campus houses the Marine Science Institute, which carries out research in oceanography, ecosystems and climate change, while involving faculty and graduate students from different programs

    Savannah State University

    • Savannah State University's 173-acre campus offers an associate's degree in aquarium science, a bachelor's degree in marine science and a master's degree in marine science. Because the campus -- founded in 1890 -- is beside the salty marshes of Georgia's Atlantic coastline, the marine study programs allow students to participate in field and laboratory studies. The school's 6,000-square-foot wet-laboratory is equipped with a dock and boats.

    Hawai'i Pacific University

    • Founded in 1965, Hawai'i Pacific University in Honolulu offers 100 undergraduate programs and 13 graduate programs on its three large campuses and eight military base campuses. The Oceanic Institute, located on 56 acres at Makapu'u Point, offers degrees in marine biology and oceanography with opportunities to learn and participate in research at the institute. This field-based work -- along with core courses -- is a main focus of the program.
