An associate of applied science is the entry-level degree in the environmental compliance field. The program requires classes in local, state and federal environmental regulations, environmental safety, waste minimization and pollution prevention. To progress in the environmental compliance field, a worker needs a bachelor of science in environmental management. This specialized degree addresses the cultural philosophies that underlie environmental issues such as natural resource depletion, and compliance with all levels of regulation. Those with an MBA in environmental compliance may work as directors of environmental compliance for a large corporation or government agency.
Continuing education is expected of those who work in environmental compliance. The National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP) is one of many organizations that offer certification courses in environmental health and safety management. The curriculum for NASP certification covers hazardous materials identification, compliance with regulations and laws at all levels of government, air quality compliance, avoiding citations and fines, and the Clean Air Act.
