Law enforcement administration programs prepare students for managerial roles within a law enforcement agency. Opportunities are available for students to develop and improve their communication and critical thinking skills. Students also evaluate police guidelines and learn about diversity, individuals rights, social order and technology. Most colleges and universities require that the professors who teach the on-campus programs also lead the distance education courses.
The courses in the program are designed to help students develop leadership skills, evaluate policing systems, analyze criminal behavior and demonstrate understanding of social policy. While students are required to take general education requirements in English, science, mathematics, communications and the humanities, students are also required to take core courses in community policing, technological management in policing, investigations management, politics and law enforcement and leadership and supervision in law enforcement.
While students are able to complete the courses in an online law enforcement administration program over the Internet, programs may also require them to complete a practicum in a local law enforcement agency. Completing a practicum offers students an opportunity to work and learn in a professional environment under a police captain or other law enforcement administrator. Gaining this experience may help graduates obtain employment in an administrative role.
In order to complete an online degree program in law enforcement administration, students must have a computer with a high-level Internet connection. Learning and lectures take place through online tutorials, readings, DVD/CD and podcasts. Students and professors communicate through email, discussion boards and chat rooms. Other technological requirements may include having an up-to-date operating system, speakers, webcam and headset.
