How to List Chemistry Lab Equipment With Descriptions

In order to fully know the materials that you have in your chemistry lab, you might be required to create a list of the equipment along with detailed descriptions. This can also serve the purpose of keeping inventory throughout the time that you are working in the lab. You will know if something breaks and you need to replace the item, or if something was stolen from the lab. It is important to be organized when making this list so that it is easily understood by yourself and others.

Use a computer to type the list so that it is easy to read and update as things change. A software program such as Microsoft Excel can help you keep it organized, but you can also use a word processing software such as Microsoft Word. Create a title at the top of the page that says "List of Chemistry Lab Equipment."

    • 2

Use Excel to create headings over the columns at the top of the chart for the name of the equipment, the model, the make, the quantity that you have and a description. If using Word, create a chart and label the rows with the same headings. You can create a chart by going to "Insert" at the top of the page and clicking on "Chart." Specify that you need five columns and as many rows as you have items.

    • 3

Enter in the names of the equipment in alphabetical order. As you enter each name, also enter the make, model, number of items and description. The make and model should be located on the bottom of the item. If you cannot find the make or model of an item, leave this section blank. Equipment in a chemistry lab includes flasks, beakers, crystallizing dishes, microscopes, thermometers, condensers, stir bars, glass rods and clamps. You might also have such things as spatulas, chromatographs, lasers, analyzers and spectrometers. Make sure to include each and every item of equipment on your list, even if it is small, for a complete inventory.

Type the descriptions using adjectives such as color, size and material from which the item is made. For example, your list might begin with 'Atomic Force Microscope' and be followed by 'Beakers.' The make, model, and number of each item would follow, along with a description. A description of the 'Atomic Force Microscope' could include such things as black, 16 inches tall and has three lenses. A description of 'Beakers' could include clear, glass and six inches tall.

Place the date at the bottom of the list so that you know when it was created. Save it to your computer as well as to a back-up source such as a flash drive or external hard drive. Print a copy to keep in the lab.
