How to Make a Good Impression for the Freshman Year

First impressions count. Even if you're in a class of hundreds of students, the impression you make with your professors and peers during your freshman year can have a lasting impact. Being on good terms with your professors can lead to jobs and references. A good impression with your classmates can lead to support during the tough parts of the school year and even lifelong friendships.

Instructions

Come to class prepared. In smaller classes, it is easy to tell who has done the readings. With homework and assignments, make sure to respect deadlines, as excuses can rub people the wrong way.

    • 2

Be on time. You may not think that the professor notices as you slip into the back of class five minutes late, but it is likely that he or she does. Showing up on time shows respect and enthusiasm for the class.

    • 3

Be the nice guy or girl on campus. When you first arrive, whether it is in class or in your dorm, treat everyone you meet with courtesy and respect. Your initial kindness will be remembered, just as a rude first impression would be. Small gestures can help make an excellent first impression, such as smiling at people in the hallway or helping to carry someone's luggage up to their room. Say hello to the people sitting next to you in class, invite people on your dorm floor for snacks and a movie, or help a foreign student with their homework.

Get involved. Active students get noticed. Getting involved in campus activities can make a great impression with peers and help you gain skills and experience that can come in handy later. College campuses usually have a wide range of activities, from arts to academics to sports. Find one that you love, or try something you've never tried before. Your involvement will show people that you're a team player and up for a good time. Getting involved also shows that you are committed and have diverse interests.
