Create an outline. Before you start any type of essay, you should have a grasp on the two novels you are comparing or other topic you have decided to write about. You should then brainstorm ideas, and create an outline with the main topics you want to highlight. Also, include a few brief notes underneath each topic that will support your thesis, or the main argument of your essay. An outline will be a useful tool to refer to as you write your essay.
Write your thesis statement and abstract. Your thesis should already be approved by your department and should make it clear to the reader what your essay will be about and what you are arguing. An abstract is a one to two page summary of your thesis, your argument and your conclusion. It is a good idea to find specific examples from the books you are comparing to support your thesis so that it is clear. Write down a few of the examples you find to support your argument on your outline so that you can refer back to them later.
Write your introduction. Your introduction should list both sides of the argument you are making. You should list the similarities or differences between the two novels. The point of the introduction is to highlight the main points that you will be making in the rest of your essay, in much more detail. The reader should have a very clear vision of what your essay will be about. The introduction should set the tone for the essay and allow the reader to anticipate what you will be presenting in it.
Write the body of the essay. The body can be quite long, and it will make up the bulk of your essay. This is your chance to show evidence to support your thesis. You will want to illustrate to the reader that you have done your research and analyzed the topic sufficiently. Include all of the main points highlighted in your outline and any research, examples or other evidence you have found to support your argument. Include necessary citations, and be mindful of your grammar and sentence structure.
Write your conclusion. Your conclusion should be a summary or review of the points you have made, as well as the part of the essay in which you explain how your thesis essay will contribute to further research on the topic. You should also write your table of contents, list of references, appendix, glossary and any other additional information.
