States That Offer Free College Tuition to Veterans

States differ on funds and ability to provide financial assistance to students who go to state schools. While there are some states that offer free college tuition to veterans of the United States military, the majority of them only give partial tuition waivers. For those veterans looking to attend school who are unable to meet the financial costs of tuition and fees, knowing whether or not your state gives free college tuition to veterans can make the difference between whether or not you obtain a degree.
  1. Connecticut

    • Veterans in the state of Connecticut are eligible for tuition waivers provided certain conditions are met. These include acceptance into a state university, that you are living in the state when the institution admits you and that you have served 90 days of active duty during wartime. However, if you were injured during duty or the period of war is shorter than 90 days, then you do not have to meet that condition. Colleges that waive tuition are state universities and regional community and technical colleges. Keep in mind that fees, like textbooks and student activity fees, are not waived.

    Montana

    • Montana waives tuition fees for honorably discharged veterans of the military who served during wartime. According to Military.com, the veteran must also be ineligible to obtain tuition assistance under any federal assistance programs. This educational benefit can be used for a variety of state schools and technical colleges; be sure to ask the college you are interested in whether or not it offers free tuition to veterans before applying.

    South Dakota

    • To obtain a tuition waiver for college in South Dakota, a military veteran must be ineligible to receive aid under the current G.I. Bill or any other federal military tuition assistance program. For qualification, the veteran must have been honorably discharged and must be currently residing in South Dakota. According to Military.com, the veteran must also satisfy one of the following conditions: been involved in active duty between August 2, 1990, and March 3, 1991; been awarded a service medal; or suffered a disabling injury from active engagement while serving. The amount of time served also plays a role in how many years of free tuition the veteran can obtain. For example, one and a half years served may give the veteran one and a half years of free tuition at a state university or local technical college in South Dakota.

    Wisconsin

    • The state of Wisconsin, in 2005, implemented its own G.I. Bill that gives veterans full tuition reimbursement. To be eligible, the veteran must have been a resident of Wisconsin when he or she registered for the military. Moreover, the veteran must also have served during wartime and received an honorable discharge. This benefit is available for veterans for up to 10 years after leaving the military and is good for eight semesters of study, or a total of 128 credits.

    New York

    • The state of New York waives tuition fees for eligible veterans who are residents of New York. For eligibility, the veteran must have been honorably discharged and served during wartime and must be a citizen of the United States. Moreover, the state of New York requests that each veteran fill out an application to apply for this tuition waiver program. This waiver applies to any state public institution or local technical college. Obtaining full tuition waiver depends on the price of the school, as the state only guarantees the amount of tuition charged at the State University of New York.

    Illinois

    • The state of Illinois implemented a grant that waives tuition fees for veterans who resided in Illinois for at least six months before entering the service and who have returned to Illinois within six months after leaving the service. This waiver applies to public institutions only. The veteran also must have served at least one full year of active duty. Applications for this waiver must be filled with the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (see References).

    Arkansas

    • The state of Arkansas provides college tuition waivers for veterans who are former prisoners of war; hence, this benefit only applies to a very small but important percentage of veterans. This benefit includes not only a tuition waiver for attending a state institution, but also funds for room and board and other expenses. It can be used at state and local technical colleges.

    Texas

    • In Texas, if a veteran has been discharged honorably and served at least 180 days of duty, tuition can be waived for him at a state institution or local technical school. The veteran has to have been a Texas resident at the time he enrolled in the service. This program may also offer partial assistance with other school fees, such as books and science lab fees.

    Washington

    • The state of Washington has implemented full and partial tuition waivers for veterans of the American military who attend a state university or community college. Requirements include honorable discharge and that the veteran served on active duty on foreign soil, international waters or another place of conflict. Every state college in Washington has its own process for waiving tuition for veterans, so those interested should inquire with each college individually.

    Wyoming

    • The state of Wyoming has a variety of programs that offer tuition assistance to veterans, their families and also those on active duty. However, currently only veterans of the Vietnam War are able to receive a full tuition waiver at state colleges and community colleges. This benefit does not expire and does not require continuous study. It is good for up to 10 semesters of study.
