Getting Scholarships for Left-Handed People

Funding a college education can be difficult. High tuition costs leave students looking for funds in any way possible, including a frantic search for scholarships and grants. One persistent schola ship rumor is that there are dedicated scholarships for a very special minority--left-handed people. This rumor turns out to be true, but if you're planning to raise money for your college education by being a lefty, you may find your college prospects very limited.

Realize there is only one U.S. scholarship for left-handed students. The Frederick & Mary F. Beckley Scholarship provides $2,000 to $5,000 to sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Juniata College, a small liberal arts college in Huntington, Pennsylvania. Southpaws with great grades are eligible for the scholarship. However, it cannot be transferred to other colleges or universities.

Use your left hand---to type in the name of a scholarship search engine. There are plenty of scholarships and grants available to students, whether they write their name with their left or right hand. Consider all your unique qualities as a person and look for organizations that provide the scholarships that are right for all of you---not just your left hand. Try a scholarship database search such as Fastweb.

Speak with your school counselor or with a financial aid officer about scholarships. She may know about scholarships and other types of funding that you've missed in your Internet search.
