College Scholarships for Music Business Students

A career in the music industry is a great way to combine a love for music with the nuts and bolts of pure business theory. Because of the specificity of the field and the relatively small number of companies that deal directly with the music business, there are not a great number of schools that offer majors in music business. However, the schools that do exist can often provide a thorough education in the field and prepare a student well for this career. Paying for these schools can be difficult, but there are several options for assistance with school tuition.
  1. School Scholarships

    • Many of the schools that offer classes or a major in music business have needs-based scholarships, which are based on a student's particular financial situation. It's important to check which schools offer these kinds of scholarships either by calling up the school's financial aid office or researching their website. In most cases a student will have to fill out a FAFSA (free applicaiton for student aid) form that will inform the schools of the financial aid they can offer a particular student.

Other schools have merit-based scholarships that are awarded based on specific criteria related to academic performance, aptitude, or an application and interview process. For example, NYU Steinhadt, one of the most prominent music business schools in the country, has needs-based as well as merit-based scholarships at the school.

    The ASCAP Foundation

    • The ASCAP foundation, an organization of music publishers, offers a variety of music industry scholarships. For those who want to pursue careers in music performance within the industry, ASCAP offers scholarships to potential jazz, musical theater, publishing, and songwriting students. Applications are available through their website and procedures to apply vary from one scholarship to another.

They also offer several scholarships within the music industry: three radio industry scholarships at Brown College in Minnesota, one at Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Michigan and one for music business students at the Mcnally Smith school of music in Minnesota.
