Federal Graduate Scholarships

In order to encourage students to pursue higher education in specific fields, the federal government offers numerous grants and scholarships. As opposed to loans that must be paid back with interest over time, scholarships and grants do not need to be repaid. The scholarships and grants offered by the federal government cover a wide range of fields including medicine, international relations and the humanities.
  1. Mental Health National Research Service Awards

    • To encourage medical students to go into the field of mental health, the government offers the Mental Health National Research Service Award. Individuals can apply for this scholarship directly, although universities and other institutions are also eligible for the awards. The awards are given to students in doctoral, post-doctoral, and M.D./Ph.D. programs. Students must be affiliated with an accredited university, and they must be conducting research in the field of mental health. The average scholarship given comes in the form of a stipend of around $23,000. Applications should be submitted through the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health.

    Fulbright Scholarships

    • Fulbright scholarships offer graduate students the opportunity to study abroad in a foreign country. Although students do not have to be specifically studying international relations, the program is designed to foster communication between the United States and other countries abroad. To be eligible, students must have completed a bachelor's degree, but not yet a doctoral degree. A Fulbright scholarship comes with all-expenses-paid transportation, books and living expenses for one year. If already affiliated with a university, applicants may prefer to contact the Fulbright scholarship representative on their individual campus. Applicants can also submit their applications to the Institute of International Education.
