How to Reduce College Debt

College is a financially stressful time for many students. Not only must they pay for their tuition, but students also must manage housing, food and book expenses. Many students must take out loans to pay for all these things, and over the course of four years, the amount of accrued debt is quite massive. Fortunately, there are ways students can reduce the amount of debt they face after graduating from college.

      Pay quarterly interest if you use unsubsidized loans. By paying interest each quarter, you can reduce the amount of interest you will end up paying after college graduation.

      Buy used textbooks when you can. Always look for used copies books before buying them new. Lots of money can be saved by buying used.

      Sell your textbooks when a class ends. If it's a book that you don't foresee using again, then sell it to a textbook store or to another student. Instead of spending the money you make on something recreational, put it in savings to use for your college loans.

      Join a work-study program. This type of program employees students in university-based jobs, and students are able to work off some of their college debt.

      Take general or basic classes at a community college. Double-check that the classes will transfer over to your university. Community college classes are far less expensive than university classes.
