Vocabulary Games for the SAT

Coming up with creative ways to study vocabulary may help students study better. Vocabulary plays a large part in determining students' scores on the SAT. The SAT, or Scholastic Aptitude Test, has been used as an important college admission standard for decades. Studying with creative vocabulary games can be an interesting and effective way to improve your SAT scores.
  1. Online Games

    • There are several different websites offering entertaining and challenging games for SAT practice. Examples include "Guess that Synonym," "Parts of Speech" and "Complete this Phrase" (see Resources for links). Online games typically work with a large word list, testing more vocabulary than a standard textbook will. These games are interactive, requiring the user to click on one or two options to complete the game. Games like these also provide feedback, such as explanations why the answer given may be right or wrong. Therefore, they provide an accessible way to study SAT vocabulary words.

    Hangman

    • Hangman is a creative guessing game that can be used to effectively study SAT vocabulary. Hangman works best in pairs or small groups. One player takes an SAT vocabulary word and writes the definition down on the board, then puts blanks for letters underneath the definition. Players have a limited number of guesses for the word before they lose the game. Adding a competitive twist to studying makes Hangman a creative way to study vocabulary for the SAT.

    Pictionary

    • Pictionary is well-known as a creative and exciting game played by thousands worldwide. Pictionary can easily be adapted as a vocabulary game for SAT words. Simply write out flash cards of SAT words and use them in place of the regular game cards. Have your group illustrate the definitions of the words on the flash cards and try to guess the words.

    Crossword Puzzles

    • Crossword puzzles have been an entertaining test of knowledge for years. They have also been adapted for studying vocabulary at many different levels, including SAT words. Crossword puzzle software like SAT Vocabulary Express is an effective way to study SAT words, because it contains over 700 puzzles. It also includes a vocabulary list, and examples of synonyms and antonyms alongside the puzzles.
