The SAT stays with the same format for questions each year. On the math portion you are given multiple choice and grid-in answers, where you must use bubbles to write in the answer. Focus on the basic math operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division along with percents, fractions, squares, exponents, roots and averages to master all bases. Many problems on the exam are word problems so focus your practice on solving word problems.
The SAT also tests your reading comprehension on the critical reading section. You are given a short passage to read and must answer questions about it. When focusing on this section, you may want to skim through the passage to get a drift for the content, look at the questions and then go back in the passage to find the detailed answers. This will save you some time as well. Remember that some information is going to be extraneous and is thrown in the passage to confuse you.
One important thing you need to focus on while studying is timing yourself. Taking practice SAT tests will introduce you to the format and get you comfortable with it. However, you cannot be too precise and run out of time. If you are unsure of a question don't ponder over it for too long. Continue on and come back to it at the end when you have extra time and have had a chance to focus on something else.
Another skill the SAT tests is your knowledge of vocabulary. You will be faced with words you may have never heard before. Look carefully at the prefixes and suffixes to see if anything stands out to give you a hint at what the word means. Cross out any answers which you know for a fact are wrong to narrow down the choices.
You also need to focus on proper structure in writing. Know the difference between contractions and possessive pronouns. Comma errors are also something you will be asked about. Commas are used when you separate two independent clauses, and use a conjunction to separate them including and, or, but, nor, so and for. Take note of subject and verb agreement in the sentences to ensure the proper format is used.
You will need to write an essay in a 25 minute section of the test. Plan your essay out before you begin writing to organize your thoughts. Keep your topic organized and clear to the reader. Proofread your essay before submitting it to check for common grammatical errors and to ensure you have not left anything out.
