How Are SAT Scores Added?

The SAT test is used to analyze your readiness to begin college. It is a commonly used tool for admission into college. It is typically taken during the last couple of years of high school. The test is comprised of three subject sections. You will receive an individual score for each section and a total overall score. Scores can be accessed online, through the mail and at your high school.
  1. Critical Reading

    • The critical reading section of the SAT is 70 minutes long and has a total of 67 questions. The questions range from passage-based, where you must read a passage and answer questions, to sentence completion, in which you are given an incomplete sentence and must correctly finish it. Your score for the critical reading part of the SAT will range from 200 to 800 points, with 800 being the best.

    Math

    • The SAT math section is 54 questions based on basic math, Algebra I and II and Geometry. This portion of testing is 70 minutes long. A calculator can be used but in not required. Your total score for the math section can range from 200 to 800 points.

    Writing

    • The writing section is 49 questions and 60 minutes in time length. It includes reading a passage and writing an essay response, reading and improving paragraphs and sentences, and locating errors within a sentence. The score for the writing section of the SAT can range between 200 and 800 points.

    Total Score

    • Your total score for the SAT will be the sum of your individual score for each of the three sections. Each section is worth a maximum of 800 points. Therefore, the highest score you can receive on the SAT is 2400. Once you have access to your scores for the critical reading, math and writing sections, add them together for your total SAT score. The average score for each section is 500 points.
