How to Fill Out an SAT College Profile

The SAT college profile is filled out during the registration process for test dates. Colleges and scholarship programs use this information to match you with opportunities. If matches are found, schools and scholarship programs send you information in the mail, which you are under no obligation to respond to. By filling out the profile honestly and accurately, you might be able to find the right school or scholarship program for your academic interests and qualifications.

  1. Fill Out the "All About Me" Section

      Select your ethnicity from the list online or on the paper registration form. This information is confidential and is not shared with other institutions. If you do not want to provide this information, select "I do not wish to respond."

      Select your mother's and father's highest levels of education from the lists online or on the paper registration form. This information is confidential and is not shared with other institutions. If you do not want to provide this information, select "I do not wish to respond."

      Select your parents' combined income from the previous year from the list online or on the paper registration form. Ask your parents for this information. It is listed on their tax returns. If you are no longer a dependent and support yourself, enter your income. This information is confidential and is not shared with other institutions. If you do not want to provide this information, select "I do not wish to respond."

      Select the language you learned to speak first, even if you no longer speak it, under the question, "What language did you learn to speak first?" Select the language you know best -- usually the language you use most often -- under "What language do you know best?" If you do not want to provide this information, select "I do not wish to respond."

      Select your high school GPA under "Your Grade Point Average." Your GPA is listed on your high school report cards and transcripts. Use the GPA that represents all of the grades you received in high school. If you do not want to provide this information, select "I do not wish to respond."

      Select "Your most recent class rank" from the list. The list divides classes into tenths and fifths. If you do not know your rank, ask a guidance counselor at school. It might also be listed on your latest report card or transcript. If your class rank is listed as a whole number, divide your rank by the total number of students in your class to get a percentage. For example, if your class rank is five and there are 100 students in your graduating class, you are in the top tenth percentile. If you do not want to answer this question, select "No response."

      Look at your grades and the results from your standardized tests to rate your ability in math, science and writing. If you frequently are at or near the top of your class in a subject, rate yourself as being in the "highest 10%" or "above average" for that subject. If you also take advanced placement courses in a subject, choose "highest 10%." Your standardized test scores might also provide information on your rank. If you tend to get C's or lower in a subject, rate yourself as "average" or "below average." This information is confidential and is not shared with other institutions.

      Select an "area of study you might find interesting" from the provided list. Choose or write down up to five majors related to that area of study. Choose or write down your first choice. Indicate how certain you are of your interest in your first choice by selecting a response.

      Select subjects that you plan on gaining credit for or being exempt from by passing qualifying advanced placement (AP) exams or courses. Select "I don't plan to apply for exemption from these courses" if you are not gaining exemptions from any courses.

      Select your citizenship from the list. If you are unsure of your citizenship or resident status, ask a parent or look at your passport.

      Select your religion from the list. If you do not want to answer, select "I prefer not to answer."

      Select any permanently disabling conditions you have from the list. If you do not have any, select "None." If you do not want to answer, select "I prefer not to answer." This information is confidential and is not shared with other institutions.

      Select an answer to indicate whether you have taken the PSAT or NMSQT.

      Select "Yes" or "No" to indicate whether you want to use the Student Search Service. This service sends the details from your college profile to educational organizations, colleges and scholarship programs that might be a match for your interests and qualifications.

    Fill Out the "I Want a College That..." Section

      Select the highest level of education you plan on completing, such as specialized training, a Bachelor's degree or a Ph.D.

      Select the types of schools you are interested in attending, such as four-year or vocational. Select whether you would prefer to attend a public, private or religiously-affiliated school. If you are unsure, select "Undecided."

      Select the size and type of school, such as all women or coed, you want to attend. If you are unsure, select "Undecided."

      Select the college setting, such as rural or large city, and where you would like to go to college, such as in your state or outside the United States. If you are unsure, select "Undecided."

      Select a response to indicate where you plan to live while you are in college. If you are unsure, select "I don't know."

      Select a response to indicate whether you are applying for financial aid to fund your education. Select a response to indicate whether you plan to find employment during college. If you are unsure, select "I don't know."

      Select the activities you are interested in participating in during college. If you aren't interested in any, select "None of the above."

      Select any areas that you might need help in, such as planning and developing study skills, while in college. If you do not plan on asking for help in any of the listed areas, select "I don't plan to ask for help in these areas."

    Fill Out the "My High School Courses" Section

      Select the total number of years you plan to take, or have taken if you've already graduated, each of the listed courses. Check the "AP/Honors" box if you have taken advanced placement, accelerated or honors courses in any of the listed subjects.

      Select your average grade in each of the listed high school courses. Your grades are listed in your report cards and transcripts. To calculate your average, assign each grade a value as follows: A equals five, B equals 4, C equals 3, D equals 2 and F equals 1. Add up all the values and divide the total by the total number of points possible.

      For example, if you received two A's and two C's in your math courses, do the following:

      (2 x 5) + (2 x 3) = 16 = Total number of points earned

      4 x 5 = 20 = Total number of points possible

      16 / 20 = 0.8 = 80 percent = B average

      Select the years, such as 9th and 10th, that you studied each mathematical subject. Select "None" if you did not study a listed subject. Select "AP" if you took an advanced placement course in the subject. Select "Dual Enrollment" for any courses where you earned high school and postsecondary credits.

    Fill Out the "My Activities & Sports" Section

      Choose up to 10 activities from the list that you have participated or plan to participate in during high school. Indicate the years of participation for each activity and whether you held a leadership position or won an award for your involvement. Select "I have not participated in any of the above activities" if you did not participate in any activities.

      Select up to six sports from the list that you have participated or plan to participate in. Select "I have not participated in any of the above sports" if you did not participate in any sports.

      Read the SAT's terms and conditions. Check the "I agree to the SAT Terms and Conditions" checkbox if you agree. If you are filling out the paper form, you might also have to sign and date the agreement.
