Take a look at an eleventh-grade math TAKS test online. See the Resource box for this article. Skim over the entire test and you will get an idea what lies ahead. Categorize the concepts in your mind and on paper.
Be sure you know how to make basic conversions of weights and measures. Understand the metric system against our customary system. Familiarize and refresh your memory on geometry shapes, forms and terminology. You will see a lot of standard algebra forms and equations. Get up to speed with those as well.
Practice systems of equations for algebra solving by substitution or using the method of elimination. Know how to graph a polynomial equation-simple ones such as parabolas, at least.
Use visualization techniques. Know what the side, top or front views look like in geometric shapes and figure, simple architecture, or sets of blocks. Learn to think logically and figure things out. This will come in handy, especially for word problems.
Understand the concepts of domain and range well. You will also see the Pythagorean Theorem over and again. Know how to find x and y intercepts. Learn ratios. Know how to calculate a percentage from scratch.
Prepare for more difficult problems than you have seen on previous TAKS, if you have taken those TAKS before. You will see more involved and complex geometry and algebra problems. You will see shapes and figures that require finding surface areas within more complicated figures or volumes. You will need to put many concepts together in one problem. But it is logical and you can do it. Practice, prepare and you will pass the eleventh-grade TAKS math test.
