The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians has shifted from paper tests to computerized tests. Although you don't need any special computer training to take the EMT practice test or the official EMT test, you may want to familiarize yourself with the basic features of a computer before attempting to take the test. If you're already a seasoned computer user, this step won't be necessary.
Purchase an EMT practice test from a site such as those listed in the Resources, below. These sites offer study guides and practice tests for the Basic Test, the Intermediate/85 Test, the Intermediate/99 Test and the Paramedic Test. Some EMT practice test sites will instantly grade your test and allow you to track your results over time.
Simulate the EMT testing environment by using a computer in a quiet room that is free from any distractions. If you plan to use your home computer, you may want to hire a babysitter for your children and make sure your phone is turned off. Another option is to take your laptop to a quiet library and take the test there.
Before starting the online EMT practice test, make sure your computer has an adequate supply of battery power or is connected to a power source. Disable pop-up ads and minimize any other distractions on your computer screen, such as automatic e-mail notifications.
Following the directions outlined in the practice test, set your timer to the duration allowed for the test. There are several types of EMT practice tests, and each one has a different time limit. Some online EMT practice tests have built-in timers.
After you've taken the EMT practice test, review all of your test questions and determine which areas you need help in. Go back and review your textbooks and study notes to improve your performance on the next practice test. After three or four days, retake the practice test. Record your results and note your progress.
