How to Pass the Police Initial Recruitment Test

The Police Initial Recruitment Test is the first part of the recruitment process for those interested in joining the police force in the U.K. The test covers basic knowledge of spelling, math, logical reasoning and information comprehension. The exam format is in two to four different sections of oral and written tests. The test is extremely competitive, and only 8 percent of applicants succeed. After this test is passed, you are then allowed to take the fitness and security tests. Passing this test can depend on how well you have prepared for it.

Instructions

    • 1

Request an application pack from the police force in which you would like to work. The force will also send you information that pertains specifically to their Police Initial Recruitment Test.

    • 2

      Complete application for the test.

    • 3

Study the book "Police Initial Recruitment Test" thoroughly (see Resources). This covers the information that will be on the test.

    • 4

Study the CD-ROM and take notes to familiarize yourself with the information that you will learn (see Resources). Reading and studying the book and CD-ROM are essential to passing the test.

    • 5

Review basic spelling and math. Having a high school education under your belt is a plus, but eighth-grade math will suffice. For spelling, you need about the fifth grade level.

    • 6

Take the mock tests that are in the book "Police Initial Recruitment Test" until you are content with your grade and timing. Allow 30 minutes for each section. The real tests have time limits; each force differs slightly in the test timing. The questions are fairly simple, but you should answer them quickly.
