Explanation of the TEAS Test

Some universities and community colleges require that students who plan to study nursing to take the Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). On the test, students are required to answer questions on a range of subject areas, including math and science.
  1. Purpose

    • The TEAS is used to test a nursing student's academic aptitude over a range of subjects. The TEAS is used to assess whether applicants for a nursing program are ready to handle the coursework involved in the curriculum.

    Subject Areas

    • Four main topics are covered in the TEAS: English and language usage, mathematics, science and reading. These subjects were selected to test the general knowledge and skills of each test-taker. Calculators are not allowed on any portion of the exam.

    Questions

    • Each of the 170 total questions on the exam is multiple-choice. There are four possible answers presented for each question, and test-takers are given a total of 209 minutes to complete the exam, with each section timed separately. There are 55 English and language usage questions, 45 mathematics questions, 30 science questions and 40 reading questions.

    Scoring

    • Scores are computed for each subject area in addition to an overall composite score. Students will need to have a passing score in each area in order to be accepted. The score which is designated as "passing" is determined by the program to which they applied.

    Registration

    • Individuals who intend to take the TEAS need to register through ATI Testing. Registration can be completed online or by the phone at 1-800-667-7531. After registration, each person receives an ID number, which remains the same for any test you take through ATI. If you have already taken a test through ATI and do not remember your ID number and password, contact ATI before taking the TEAS to obtain this information.

    Study Resources

    • ATI Testing publishes several study tools for students who need to take the TEAS. An online practice test mimics the actual exam, while a study manual addresses possible question topics for each subject area.
