The TEAS Test of Essential Academic Skills

The Test of Essential Academic Skills, or TEAS, is a standardized multiple choice exam that many prenursing students must take and pass before beginning nursing school. This exam is often a significant admission requirement for many registered nurse programs.
  1. Background

    • The TEAS was created and is administered by Assessment Technologies Institute. ATI is an assessment company that specializes in nursing and prenursing exams. The TEAS is designed to evaluate the student nurse's knowledge of math, science, reading and English.

    TEAS Questions

    • Prenursing students should expect to answer a total of 170 questions in the four sections. Each question is multiple choice, with the possibility of four different answers.

    Time Frame

    • Test takers are given 209 minutes to complete all 170 questions. Questions not answered during this time will be scored as incorrect.

    Benefits

    • The TEAS benefits nursing schools by providing critical information on the student's ability to succeed in school. This includes general academic knowledge as well as information that is applicable to nursing as a profession. The test can benefit the student by giving her an idea of academic expectations.

    Registration

    • Students may register online at the ATI website for the TEAS by choosing a city/state location and date/time.
