Rhode Island GED Requirements

The General Education Development (GED) certificate is considered by most institutions of higher learning as equivalent to a high school diploma. Individuals seeking entrance into a university or pursuing other similar continuing education may be required to have either a GED or high school diploma. The Rhode Island GED requirements are clearly defined and simple to fulfill.
  1. Age Requirements

    • In order for individuals to apply for the GED exam process in Rhode Island, they must be at least 18 years old and not currently enrolled in any secondary school. This requirement may be waived for underage applicants if they are at least 16 years old and have received special permission from the Commissioner of Education or 17 years old with special permission from the Chief Examiner of their desired testing center.

    Applications

    • Candidates should apply in person at one of the authorized testing centers. Forms are available for out-of-state applicants and military personnel when applying in person is not possible. There is a processing fee of $55 that covers the issuance of the diploma and the official transcript required by law as proof of GED completion.

    Passing

    • In order to receive a GED in Rhode Island, applicants must score at least 410 out of a possible 800 on each of the five sections of the test: reading, writing, math, science and social studies. The overall score must have an average of 450 or a total of 2,250.

    Retesting

    • Applicants who fail the exam may retake it approximately six months after the successful completion of a preparatory course or at the discretion of the center's Chief Examiner.
