The purpose of the ASVAB is to test for general aptitudes and formulate how well the enlistee fits into job categories.
Aptitude categories cover Science and Math (General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge); Language and Reading Skills (Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Sum of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension); and technical knowledge (Auto and Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information).
One of the basic measurements is the Armed Forces Qualification Test. This is a combination of Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge and Verbal Composite multiplied by two. A minimum score of 31 is necessary to join the Navy.
Job placement is based off of the scores from the different aptitude tests. Not all aptitudes are taken into consideration for each job.
Click on the "ASVAB and Navy Jobs" link in the Resource section for a listing of job classification and the minimum scores required for admittance.
The ASVAB is designed for enlisted Navy members. Aviation and officer jobs required a different test.
Jobs in officer aviation programs require taking the full Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB).
Applicants to the Officer Candidate School must take the Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) portion of the ASTB
