You must be at least 17 years old to take the GED exam. If you are exactly 17 years old at the time of testing, you must provide an Indiana exit interview that shows you have withdrawn from high school as well as passing scores on the Official GED Practice Tests.You must have also lived in Indiana for at least 30 days before the test and have not obtained a high school diploma.
There are more than 70 GED testing sites in the state of Indiana. Contact your nearest testing site to schedule your GED exam. To find a list of testing sites in your area, you can call 317-232-0522 or see Resources. Also be aware that there registration fees vary depending on the testing center. The total cost for the GED exam is $60 at most, with each of the five sub-tests varying from $6 to $10 (as of 2010). You must also bring a photo ID and two other forms of identification at the time of registration.
You will have more than seven hours to complete the writing, social studies, science, reading and math sections. The writing section is broken down into a multiple choice section that tests grammar and an essay portion that asks you to answer a question in essay form. The social studies section tests you on history, government and economics. The science section tests you on life, physical, earth and space sciences. The reading section tests you on different types of literature, such as popular literature and nonfiction works. The math section is broke down into two subsections, where one section allows you to use a calculator to solve math problems while the second section does not. The math section tests you on algebra, geometry and statistics.
One way of getting a good GED score is by studying before the exam. Buying GED preparation books that show you what to expect on the exam and have useful practice tests to help you prepare. Enroll in a free adult education program that has an instructor that can attend to your individual needs. You can find a list of Adult Education programs at located in the Resources section. There are 800 points possible on each section. In order to pass, you must score at least 410 points on each section, have 2,250 points total, and have an average score of 450 on all five sections combined.
If you do not pass sections of your GED exam, you will still have an opportunity to retake the test. However, there are different waiting periods you must abide by depending on the scores you receive. If you received a score of 2,150 to 2,240, you must wait 30 days before retaking the test. If you received a score of 2,140 and below, you must wait 90 days before retaking the test. After two failures, you must wait at least six months before taking the test again. There is no limit to the amount of times you can take the test.
