California GED Information

The General Educational Development (GED) test is administered exclusively by the American Council on Education. It cannot be taken online, but the Department of Education of the State of California offers nearly 200 test-taking locations throughout the state.
  1. Content of the GED

    • The GED Test measures proficiency in five areas: language arts (reading and writing), mathematics, science, and social studies.

    Eligibility

    • Students are eligible to take the GED if they are 18 or will turn 18 in 60 days. Younger students may take the GED if they are not currently enrolled in school. Test-takers who are currently in the military or serving in a correctional facility are also eligible if they meet a number of specific criteria demonstrating adequate academic skills.

    Results in California

    • Seventy-three percent of the nearly 60,000 students who took the GED test in 2008 in California received a passing grade.

    Accomodations

    • Some accommodations will be made for certain disabilities, including Braille examinations for those who are visually impaired. Requests for accommodations must be made through the State GED Office.
