GED Exam Information

For those who have not completed their high school education, there are alternatives. Many choose to take the GED or General Education Development exam.
  1. Equivalency

    • Completing the GED is the equivalent of a receiving a high school diploma. Note that test takers must be at least sixteen years of age or over.

    Content

    • The GED exam is seven hours in duration spread out over three days. The exam covers Reading, Writing, Science, Math and Social Studies.

    Testing Center

    • The exam must be taken at a GED testing center. It cannot be taken online or at home. Test takers can locate a GED testing center through the American Council of Education's "Find a GED Testing Center" tool (See Resources). Contact your local testing center for dates.

    Scores

    • The highest score possible is 2,250, with each correct answer being worth one point. Minimum passing scores vary depending on location.

    Preparation

    • Test takers can prepare for the exam through special GED courses held in their area or through materials available at a bookstore or online. The website of the American Council on Education provides a list of study options, as well as a guide to finding GED courses (See Resources).
