Start test preparation early. Teachers and parents should begin reviewing all relevant material at least one month before the PSSA test is given.
Review any material from the school year that will be tested on the PSSA. For grades 3 through 8 and grade 11, teachers should focus on reading and mathematics skills. Students in grades 4, 8 and 11 should focus additional attention on science skills.
Print out practice tests or worksheets to use with students during class time. The PSSA Prep and Study Island websites (see Resources) offer printable materials that target the core skills your students will need to know for the PSSA test.
Send study materials home with your students every day leading up to the PSSA testing. These materials should coincide with what is being reviewed in class. Include a note to parents explaining how they can assist their child in studying and using the materials to prepare for the PSSA.
Form study groups during break times, recess or after school to help students who are struggling with the concepts. You can have students with a better understanding of the material volunteer to help, or create a rotating schedule for teachers.
Take periodic breaks during the study time. Students need time to relax and process the information you have given them. Do some stretches, take a walk outside (weather permitting) or play a class game to unwind with your class.
