How to Get Ready for the PSAT

High school juniors take the PSAT in order to prepare for the SAT and to qualify for National Merit Scholarships. The PSAT is composed of three sections: critical reading, math, and writing skills. The full PSAT takes two hours and ten minutes to complete. Students should begin preparing early for this test so that they are ready on exam day. Students can take sample tests and participate in study groups so that they will understand the types of questions asked on the PSAT.

Instructions

    • 1

Register early for the test. Students should sign up at their high schools, typically in the spring before their junior year. Students will then learn their exact testing date.

    • 2

Complete PSAT sample questions in order to become familiar with the format of the test. Once a student has completed his testing registration, a PSAT information packet will be mailed out. This packet will contain sample questions from each section of the PSAT.

    • 3

Talk to your school counselor and see if PSAT study groups are available at your school. You can also purchase PSAT study books online or from your local bookstore.

    • 4

Familiarize yourself with the test taking location. If the PSAT will be given at your high school, make sure you know which room will be used for testing. If the PSAT will be given at a different location, make sure you have good directions for that facility.

    • 5
Get plenty of sleep the night before the PSAT so you can perform at your best level.

Get at least eight hours of sleep the night before the test so that you will go in feeling relaxed and refreshed. Eat a good breakfast so that hunger will not distract you from the test.
