Games to Prepare Students for the PSSA

The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment test is a standardized exam used to gauge how well students are doing in reading, writing, math and science. The scores are used by the commonwealth and federal government to assess and rate individual schools. Schools where students consistently fail to meet certain test score levels face sanctions.
  1. Game Shows

    • Popular game shows can be mimicked to make learning the standardized test questions more fun. Set up a stage area and have the children compete against children of their own grade level. Have three children, or more compete together. Use a buzzer system obtained from any academic bowl contest so the children can buzz in and be the first to answer a question. If a buzzer system is not available, use a slap-o-matic game piece that comes with several popular board games. Use the fastest correct answer and eliminate wrong answers during the round.

    Computer Games

    • Play online computer games to prepare for the PSSA testing. Online sites made especially for the PSSA test are available for free. Have the children spend time each day in the schools computer lab racing themselves for a better score. Children have fun and learn at the same time as they play popular computer games. Speed and focus are important for keeping up with the PSSA.

    Worksheets and puzzles

    • Standard crossword puzzles, word-search games and match quest are available and fun for children to do. Make your own customized worksheets at game sites or go to the pssa-prep website and use worksheets already available for students use.

    Active Games

    • Line up the class in two teams and play math baseball. Let the students select varying degrees of tough questions. A single is easy, a double is tougher and so on. Throw them a question and if they get it right they can run to a designated first base. Three wrong answers and the team sits down as the other team takes the classroom field.
