Subjects That Are Covered in the Mathematics GED Test

The General Education Development (GED) test is designed to measure the skills and knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma by testing in five subject areas: mathematics, reading, writing, science and social studies. The mathematics section, in which test takers are given 90 minutes to complete 50 questions, measures analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving and reasoning skills. The mathematics portion covers four areas: number operations and number sense, measurement and geometry, data analysis and statistics, and algebra.
  1. Number Operations and Number Sense

    • The number operations and number sense section covers 20 to 30 percent of the math section. You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator to solve square roots, exponents and scientific notation computations. You will work with ratios and proportions in real-world hypothetical problems. You should know how to solve arithmetic problems with integers, decimals and percents. Some of the problems may require you to estimate, round off or compare numbers.

    Measurement and Geometry

    • Another 20 to 30 percent of the math section will require you to solve problems involving circles, triangles and rectangles. You will need to solve problems that deal with parallel and perpendicular lines and be able to find the length, area, perimeter and volume of different figures. You will be tested on being able to use coordinates and coordinate graphs and to calculate the slope of a line and the distance between different points on a plane. You will also use geometric properties and solve problems using the Pythagorean theorem.

    Data Analysis and Statistics

    • In the data analysis and statistics section you will need to know how to find the mean, mode and median. You will need to compare and contrast different sets of data as well as understand how to read graphs, tables and charts. This section also requires you to know how to solve probability problems. This section comprises 20 to 30 percent of the math section.

    Algebra

    • The algebra section tests your ability to understand basic factoring as well as analyze tables, charts and graphs. You should know which algebraic symbols and formulas to use to solve simple equations. You will be tested on linear and quadratic equations. You will need to solve proportions and percent problems.
