What Are GED Results?

The General Education Development or GED is an examination for adults who don't have a high school diploma. Adults who pass the test earn a diploma equivalent and may qualify for employment or entry to a post-secondary institution. Approximately 683,519 adults took the GED test in 2009, however only 472,913 passed the test, according to American Council on Education (ACE).
  1. GED Test

    • The GED examination consists of five multiple-choice sections. Each test measures different subjects studied in high school. The tests consist of Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts. Test-takers also must complete a writing section called an essay. The examination takes approximate seven hours to complete. Test-takers have the choice to complete the examination all at one time or in two sittings.

    Test Results

    • GED test results indicate whether test-takers have passed or failed the GED examination. The GED test results provide two sets of numbers. One set of numbers is called standard scores. The standard scores allow test-takers to compare their numbers across tests and test forms, according to the ACE. Typically, the standard scores are on the test results because some tests contain different questions or forms of the GED examination. Thus, not every test-taker completes the same examination. The second set of numbers is known as the percentile rank. The rank indicates test-takers' performance on each tests when compared to graduating seniors who took the examination.

    Interpreting Results

    • The standard GED test results are the scores that indicate whether test-takers have passed or failed. Each correct answer is worth a point. The points are converted into the standard scores ranging from 200 to 800. Test-takers need at least a standard score of 410 on each section to pass that section. For example, a test-taker with 310 on the math section fails that section, but if he earns a 410 on science will pass that section. Test-takers need at least an average of 2250 on all five sections to pass the exam overall.

    Considerations

    • Test-takers whose standard score isn't passing can retake the examination with conditions. They can retake the section they failed at least two more times in a calendar year for a total of three tests per year, according to Education Portal. However, the rest of the passing scores still stand. Thus, once the failed session is passed, test-takers pass the GED examination.
