What Are the Scholastic Aptitude Test Results?

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is one of the two most commonly taken tests by soon-to-be graduating seniors who plan on attending college. The results of your SAT is a determining factor in getting accepted into a university or even what types of scholarships you can receive, so you'll need to have a strong grasp of exactly how to analyze your SAT scores.
  1. Sections

    • The Scholastic Aptitude Test results are broken into three sections, plus one composite score. The three individual sections are reading, writing and math. The reading, writing and math sections are all composed of three smaller sections that make up a composite score for each section. The results of each smaller section will be compiled to form a grade in each reading, writing or math section. The composite score is a combined score of every section of the test. This is the score that most schools look at when determining acceptance and scholarship opportunities.

    Points

    • The best possible SAT score is 2,400; however, a perfect score is rarely attained. Students can earn a maximum 800 points for each section. The average SAT score of each section is usually 500, which gives an average composite score of around 1,500. The lowest score possible composite score is 600.

    Checking Results

    • Scholastic Aptitude Test results can be checked online at the SAT's official website (see Resources) and are usually available within two to three weeks of completion of the test. Log-in information to view the online results are distributed when the student register's on the SAT's official page. By default, SAT results are mailed to the address listed as the student's mailing address, which is required to register for the test. Mailing results usually take four to six weeks to reach their destinations.

    Sending Results to Colleges

    • Each university has an individualized policy on receiving SAT scores, but many request a copy be sent to its office for verification. A mailed copy can be usually sent to an Office of Admissions, or students can submit SAT scores from the SAT's official page. This option allows students to submit only the scores they want colleges to see and can be accessed by registering on the SAT's official page.
