All questions on the math portion of the regular SAT can be answered without the use of a calculator. However, it is advised that you bring a calculator with you and use it; calculators are permitted for use on all SAT mathematics questions. If you are taking the Level 1 or Level 2 Mathematics Subject Tests, you will need a graphing calculator to answer some of the questions. Level 1 and 2 are currently the only mathematics subject tests offered.
All graphing, scientific and four-function calculators are permitted for use on the SAT. While you can use a four-function calculator, it is not recommended. If you bring a calculator with raised keys or display, you will be given a seat out of the view of other test takers to avoid cheating.
You may not use a calculator on a laptop or personal computer, handheld organizer, electronic writing pad or cell phone. Any calculator that requires the use of electricity, makes noise, has a tape or uses a QWERTY keyboard is not permitted.
While you can do every math question on the math portion of the SAT without a calculator, it is strongly suggested that you bring one, even if you think you might not use it. Do not buy an expensive calculator just for the test; if you bring a new calculator you are unfamiliar with, it may end up hurting your score more than helping it. You should practice with your calculator before test day. Make sure your batteries are fresh so you don't show up on test day with a nonworking calculator.
