What Are the GMAT Tests?

Many graduate schools require potential students to take the Graduate Management Admission Test as part of their admission process. This test is an especially popular standardized test when looking for admission into business programs, but other areas of study use the GMAT as well. The GMAT has three sections: analytical writing, quantitative and verbal.
  1. Analytical Section

    • In the analytical writing section, the test taker has to write two 30-minute essays. One essay requires an analysis of an issue, while the essay is an analysis of an argument. Two judges score the analytical writing essays on a score from one to six. The final score is an average of the two.

    Quantitative Section

    • The quantitative section -- or math section -- has a 75-minute time limit or 2.03 minutes per question. There are 37 questions, all multiple choice. The questions in this section pertain to solving problems and data. This section is given a score from 0 and 60.

    Verbal Section

    • The verbal section can be thought of as the language arts and literacy section. Seventy-five minutes is allotted to answer 41 questions. The questions relate to reading comprehension, reasoning and sentence editing. This section is also given a score from 0 to 60.

    The Process

    • Upon completion of the exam, the test taker receives an unofficial report of the test results. Official scores are sent to universities of the test takers choice. You must register and pay a registration fee. The test is administered in a variety of testing centers throughout the United States. Mba.com is the official website of the GMAT test. You can take the GMAT once every 31 days, but not more than five times in a year.
