Self-study is an entirely self-directed study plan that you design yourself based on your needs. Typically, a self-study program involves working through a GMAT guidebook and taking practice tests. Many reputable companies publish books for GMAT self-study; try to examine more than one to find one that fits your learning style. Because the GMAT is computer-based and adaptive, all self-study programs must include at least some similar tests. Many test prep books and prep company websites include at least one or two free practice tests you can use. If you can discipline yourself to devote enough time to self-study, it can be as effective as any organized study program.
Many test prep companies offer classes of a variety of lengths and costs. These classes are more expensive than self-study but come with a variety of benefits. They give you direct access to an expert, structure your study schedule and give you access to computer-adaptive tests. In larger classes, you may have to compete for attention from your instructor, however, and you must pace your studying with the rest of the class. Any extra time you need to understand a concept will need to be reviewed on your own time. Many national testing companies such as Kaplan, Princeton Review and Powerscore offer classes across the United States. Also, check to see if any local companies advertise in places like Craigslist; these smaller companies often teach similar material for lower prices.
Hiring a private tutor combines the best parts of both self-study and prep classes but generally also costs the most amount of money. Most prep companies offer tutoring packages, and many independent tutors advertise their services on websites like Craigslist. Tutoring allows you to receive feedback and direction from an expert while allowing you to focus solely on the topics on which you need the most help. Hiring a tutor from a national prep company should also give you access to their computer-adaptive tests. If you choose the tutoring route to study, meet with the tutor first to make sure you and the tutor will work well together.
If none of these options sound completely satisfactory, combining them into a personalized plan is easy. Many tutoring companies offer short weekend classes that that you can use as refresher courses. Some programs also offer online classes. If you take a larger class, most companies offer a discount on tutoring hours, and you may be able to convince your class instructor to meet with you before or after class for a small amount of free tutoring.
