The Best Scores on the GED Test

The GED (General Equivalency Degree) Test is actually a series of five tests taken over seven and a half hours. You can choose to take these test all at the same time or separately to attain your GED diploma. Scoring for the test considers both individual test scores as well as an overall comprehensive score to pass. An additional essay portion is required and scores differently than all the multiple-choice sections. High scores can be achieved in individual sections as well as on the combined score.
  1. Sections

    • The best score for each section is 800 points. On each test, you earn between 200 and 800 points. To get the GED diploma, you need a minimum of 410 on each section. The sections include social studies, science, reading, writing and two sections of math. The writing section requires an original essay that counts for 40 percent of the overall writing score when combined with the multiple-choice section. Some math problems are not multiple choice but are still graded on a correct or incorrect scale.

    Combined Score

    • In addition to attaining 410 on each section you must make an average of 450 on all sections to pass the exam. This means you could score significantly higher on the one section to make up for making a 410 on one of the other portions. The lowest combined score needed to pass is 2250; this completes the average of 450 per section. The best score possible on the combined total of the GED is 4000.

    Essay Scoring

    • Essay scoring is somewhat subjective, as individual essay readers will score the original work. The score is based on how well you organize your writing, if you answer the prompt by sticking to the main idea and if you include details and examples to back up your point of view. Good grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and word choice are also scored. The overall grade is on a four-point scale and will be scored by two readers. The two scores are averaged together. You must make two points to pass the writing section and get a composite score. If you fail the essay portion, you will have to retake both the essay and the writing multiple choice to pass.

    On Average

    • Two out of three people who take the GED test pass. Your chances increase by taking a GED prep course and studying. GED practice tests also show a high success rate in preparing students for the exam. These practice tests often show you where you could use a little more study time and what are your strongest areas. If you don't have time to take a regular prep course, the programs and practice tests are now available online.
