GED Requirements for 16-Year Olds in Maryland

A General Education Development, or GED, exam tests your knowledge of common high school subjects, and passing it grants you a certificate that is generally accepted as the equivalent of a high school diploma. Earning a GED opens up better college and job prospects, improves your self confidence and shows others that you have the drive to succeed. Maryland, like every state, has its own requirements that you must meet in order to take the GED.
  1. Age

    • In Maryland you must be at least 16 years old to sit for the GED exam. Even if you leave high school before your 16th birthday, you must wait until after you turn 16 to take the test.

    Residency

    • You must be a resident of Maryland for a minimum of three months before you can take the exam. If you just moved to Maryland, establish your residency first. Sign up for a GED exam date that is at least three months after you officially become a resident.

    Schooling

    • You cannot take the GED until you have officially been out of school for six months. If you leave high school, spend the next few months preparing for the exam by studying or taking classes that do not count towards your six month eligibility requirements.

    Diploma

    • The GED test is not for students who already have a high school diploma. Even if you want to brush up on your knowledge or see how much information you retained from high school, you cannot take the GED exam.

    Fee

    • In order to take the GED, you must pay a registration fee. In 2011 the fee is $45.
