Maryland GED Requirements

If you didn't graduate from high school, a General Educational Development, or GED, test can show employers or colleges that you have the same knowledge that a high school graduate has. The exam tests your knowledge of math, writing, reading, science, and social studies. Each state has its own requirements that you must meet to be eligible for the test. These are the requirements for the state of Maryland.
  1. Age

    • You may have known early on that school was not the best choice for you, but unless you are at least 16 years old, you cannot take the GED exam in Maryland.

    Residency

    • You have to be a resident of Maryland for at least three months before you can take the exam in Maryland. If you've recently moved, you need to wait or take the exam in your former state.

    School Status

    • To take the GED test in Maryland, you cannot have attended high school within the past six months. This refers to an official high school program. Some high schools or community colleges may offer courses that help you prepare for the GED exam, and these are not included in this requirement.

    No High School Diploma

    • The GED exam is a test for people who have not graduated from high school. You cannot use the exam as a way to test your knowledge if you already hold a diploma.

    Payment

    • Each testing center will require payment before you can take the exam. Prices vary depending on the testing center, but are typically less than $100. This does not include the cost of preparatory classes you may take.
