How to Fill Out an Answer Grid

Answer grids are forms used in standardized tests, such as the ACT, the SAT, the GED exam and many other exams. It is a form populated with answer bubbles that you must fill in with a pencil. The answer grid will be read by a computer, and slight mistakes in filling it out can cause the computer to mis-read your answers and grade you inaccurately. Correctly filling out an answer grid will ensure that your test is read properly and that you get the score that you deserve.

Check out the answer grid before you start. The answer grid will vary slightly in its layout from test to test. There should be a place for your name, an ID number (if necessary) and the section where you fill in the answer bubbles. These will be numbered according to the questions on the test.

Read the question from the test book and figure out the correct answer. Go to the corresponding answer bubble in your answer grid. Use your No. 2 pencil to completely darken the bubble. A check mark or an "X" won't be read. Stay within the lines to avoid a computer error.

Double-check to make sure you completed the right question. Skipping or marking the wrong bubble on even a single answer can cause you to fill in the wrong bubbles for the rest of the sheet. You can erase your answer bubbles, but the computer may still detect the erased answer. The computer will mark the problem wrong if it detects two filled in bubbles.

Repeat these steps until you have finished the test. Double-check again to make sure each bubble has been filled in completely. Erase any stray marks you may have made. Use the alphabet bubbles underneath the "name" section to fill in your name and the number bubbles to fill in your identification number, if necessary.

Use the number answer grids to fill in any math problems that require them. Not every test will require this type of answer grid. Tests that do use these bubbles include the GED exam. There are generally four bubbles available for each question. Fill the grid out from left to right. For example, if your answer was 5,783, fill in the grid with "5," "7," "8," and "3" from left to right. Leave a space for a decimal point or fraction.
