How Can I Offer the GED Course at My Church?

The General Equivalency Diploma is an alternative high school diploma for students who did not complete high school. Passing a GED exam can replace a high school diploma as a qualification for jobs, college admission and military service. The American Council on Education (ACE) administers the GED exam at specific locations. However, GED preparation classes are regulated by state education departments. You can offer GED classes at your church if you follow your state's guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your state Department of Education for specific requirements. Each state has different guidelines, but generally you will need to have a person with teaching experience to lead the preparation class.

    • 2

Review the GED testing to understand the format and procedure of the test. Obtain a copy of the American Council on Education's GED manual, available online. Also make sure you know where the GED testing centers are in your community.

    • 3

Acquire practice GED tests and other materials helpful to students trying to get their GED. You can get preparation materials through ACE's website.

    • 4

Ensure that your church is physically adequate for a community GED program. It should be accessible for disabled individuals and have a room large enough to use as a classroom. Computers with Internet access are also helpful.

    • 5

Advertise your new program at your church and in the community. Decide on any requirements for your program, such as whether students need to be members of the church to sign up for classes. Decide how many students your program can accommodate. Although states generally do not require a certain student-teacher ratio, most GED courses involve a lot of one-on-one time with students.
