How to Appeal an HSPT Result

In certain states, high school students must receive a "proficient" score on the High School Placement Test to graduate. If, during the school year, a student has experienced extenuating circumstances and, as a result, their HSPT scores were not proficient, there is little the student can do to appeal the result. There are, however, steps the student can take to pass the HSPT.

    • 1

Review the student's test scores. After taking the HSPT, the student will receive an Individual Student Report. Note each subject in which the student has not received a proficient score. Any score that is not marked proficient qualifies the student to participate in the Special Review Assessment process.

    • 2

Comprehend how the Special Review Assessment process works. This process allows students to retake any HSPT for which they did not receive a proficient score. The Special Review Assessment involves a series of tests, similar in composition to the HSPT.

    • 3

Enroll the student in the appropriate Special Review Assessment Instructional Program. The student must participate in the instructional program that pertains to the subject or subjects in which they did not receive a proficient score on their HSPT.

    • 4

Prepare the student for the Performance Assessment Tasks. After the Special Review Assessment Instructional Program is complete, the student must complete the Special Review Assessment Performance Assessment Tasks.

    • 5

Identify the composition of the Performance Assessment Tasks. The Special Review Assessment Performance Assessment Tasks are similar in content to the HSPT. There are three sections for language arts literacy: Writing, Narrative Reading and Persuasive Reading section and four sections for mathematics.

    • 6

Know the minimum passing score requirements. Students must pass at least three of the four mathematics sections. For the language arts literacy section, students must receive a score of 80 percent or above in both the Narrative Reading and Persuasive Reading sections and a total score of seven in the Writing section.
