How Do I Rescore a GRE for Analytical Writing?

The Graduate Record Exam, or GRE for short, is the prerequisite exam for students applying to graduate school in most disciplines. Two of the three sections of the exam are computer-adaptive, meaning that the test is scored by a computer as you take it. The analytical writing portion, however, cannot be scored by a computer, and must be sent to readers for grading. Since this is the only portion of the test that is subjective, ETS, the company that makes the GRE, allows you to request that your essays be rescored if you feel that they were scored unfairly.

Instructions

  Review your score report and compare it with the GRE analytic writing rubric (www.ets.org/gre/general/scores/how/issue/). If you are certain that one or both of your essays were scored incorrectly, request a rescore from the Educational Testing Service.

  Complete a written request, explaining your reason for requesting a rescore. Include your name, date of birth, test registration number, test date, address, and phone number in the request.

  Write a check for $55 to the Educational Testing Service. Enclose the check with your written request in a sealed envelope.

  Mail the request to GRE-ETS, PO Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000. Wait four weeks to receive your updated score reports in the mail.
