How to Study for the GRE in NYC

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is designed to assess how well a college student would do in graduate school. Although admission committees consider may criteria when deciding whom to admit, such as college transcripts, letters of recommendation and a letter of purpose, the GRE is an important component of your application. Fortunately there are many ways to study for the GRE, both online and locally in New York City.

      Go online and look for study materials for the GRE. Many websites offer free materials that help you study. You can use these to study and practice the test on your own time.

      Familiarize yourself with the GRE test. It has three sections: verbal, mathematics and analytical. Look over each section and note what types of questions that will be asked.

      Search online for resources in your borough or neighborhood. New York City has dozens of study groups for the GRE, some led by a tutor and some self-led. In addition, onsite classes are held by testing centers and community colleges.

      Locate testing centers that offer practice tests and consider taking a practice exam. Practice tests are offered both online and through study guides, but the onsite experience will allow you to experience the testing setting before you take the actual exam. This may allow you to concentrate more effectively on the day of the test.
