Download free study guides from the Educational Testing Center website. The ETS offers free study guides for students preparing for the exam. A variety of free guides in PDF form can be found here: ets.org/gre/general/prepare. The study guides contain detailed descriptions for each section along with sample questions. Remember that the ETS is the organization that creates the actual exam, so using this guide will give you the most accurate idea for what types of questions you will be expected to answer.
Familiarize yourself with each section of the verbal reasoning portion of the exam. Full descriptions of each section can be found in the guide titled: "Preparing for the Verbal and Quantitative Sections of the GRE General Text" found here: ets.org/gre/general/prepare. For example, be sure you understand the difference between analogy, looking for a relationship between two words, and antonym, which is finding the opposite word for that given. The sentence completion section measures the ability to understand vocabulary words within a particular context, and the reading comprehensions section, which measures the ability to analyze written text and understand the functions of words in relation to larger segments of text
Practice the exam. Take as many practice exams as possible. This will help you identify weaknesses in your verbal abilities. For example, if you continue to score poorly on the analogy section, brush up on your vocabulary.
Practice your vocabulary. Use a dictionary to look up definitions of words that are unfamiliar to you. In addition to the free guides offered by ETS, there are many study guides available for purchase. Such study guides give lists of common vocabulary words most commonly used on the exams. Practice memorizing definitions of words you have difficulty with until you are more comfortable with them.
