A flannel board is constructed from a study surface covered by felt or another fabric that clings to material. Felt naturally clings to felt, so you can create any objects from felt squares. Characters and images based on stories can be cut from the felt squares and placed on the board during story time. For example, when reading "The Three Little Pigs," you can create felt images of the pigs, their houses and the Big Bad Wolf.
Using flannel pieces to represent characters from a story, you can place the pieces on the board to represent movement in the setting and interaction between characters. In "The Three Little Pigs," you can move the wolf toward each pig's home as the story progresses. Students can move the characters to retell the story and demonstrate comprehension. On a board with felt alphabet letters, you can ask students to spell simple words or identify letters based on their sounds.
